A great disturbance in the Force: Carrie Fisher has died

RIP Carrie Fisher.

Carrie Fisher has died.

Four days after suffering a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles, the 60-year-old died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday, People reports.

Fisher rose to fame after she landed the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars, and went on to become a prolific author and mental health advocate.

She reprised her role as Princess Leia for 2015's The Force Awakens, a return to the iconic character 22 years after Return of the Jedi. Fisher is the daughter of two entertainers – singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds. Reynolds on Christmas said Fisher was in stable condition, and that she would share any news.

Her most recent book, The Princess Diarist, goes over her time on the Star Wars set. She's been open about struggles with drugs in the past, specifically cocaine while filming The Empire Strikes Back.

At the age of 29, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Fisher's first stint in showbiz came when she was 15 years old, when she appeared in the show Irene on Broadway. During her career, she appeared in films such as Shampoo, The Blues Brothers, and When Harry Met Sally ... .

Her writing was always honest and sharp, and she could never be accused of taking herself too seriously; all are qualities that are on display in this snippet about her obituary from her book Wishful Drinking.

Tributes are pouring in on social media. Here are a few.
