Arrests for curfew breaking, but otherwise 'peaceful' night in Minneapolis

At least 30 people arrested for violating the curfew.

Things were relatively calm in Minneapolis Thursday night as more than 1,000 law enforcement officials from several agencies patrolled the Twin Cities a day after misinformation about a suspect shooting himself on Nicollet Mall prompted rioting and looting Wednesday night.

The cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul issued curfews from 8 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday in order to keep the peace. According to KSTP, 30 people were arrested in the first hour and 15 minutes of the curfew and officials also recovered an illegal firearm.

MPR News reports that streets downtown were empty except for hundreds of police, National Guard troops, sheriff's deputies and state troopers.

BMTN has reached out to Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments for more information with regards to arrest numbers.

Unrest, which led to vandalism and looting in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday night, stemmed from rumors about a Black man being shot by police when he had actually killed himself.

This comes months after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police on Memorial Day and days after the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, which have led to nationwide calls for police reform.
