A 26-year-old man was seriously injured when he was hit by a squad car in Eagan early Thursday.

The Eagan police officer radioed in, requesting an ambulance after he hit the man on westbound Yankee Doodle Road near Coachman Road around 12:28 a.m., a news release says.

The man, who was identified in the State Patrol's incident report as a 26-year-old from South St. Paul, was brought to Region's Hospital, where he's believed to be in serious condition.

The news release says the officer was on routine patrol when he hit the man with his marked police car, with the State Patrol's report noting the pedestrian was walking in the right lane of traffic at the time of the incident.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the incident, according to the release.

There have been more than 100 traffic-related fatalities on Minnesota roads this year, including at least 12 pedestrians deaths, according to the Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths initiative website.

Donna Berger, the director of the Office of Traffic Safety, spoke with BringMeTheNews about the number of pedestrian incidents on state roads this year.

She urged motorists to pay attention and watch for pedestrians. But also asked that pedestrians be smart and safe when crossing the road – make sure motorists see you before you walk into the street, Berger advises, and wear reflective clothing if walking around after dark.
