A Pixar exhibit is coming to the Science Museum of Minnesota

It's only the fourth museum in the country to get this exhibit.

If you've ever wanted to learn about how a Pixar movie gets made, this is your chance.

The Science Museum of Minnesota is getting a new exhibit this summer that details the science and technology behind some box office favorites like Toy Story – the first computer-animated feature film – Inside Out, Monsters Inc., and more, a news release says.

"'The Science Behind Pixar' will bring the perfect blend of popular culture, art, and science to the Science Museum this summer," Science Museum of Minnesota president Alison Rempel Brown said. "So much goes into creating what looks like the magic of Pixar films – and much of it stems from creative problem solving and computational thinking. Visitors are going to love what this exhibit has to offer them regarding science learning, nostalgia, and hands-on fun."

The exhibit opens June 9 and runs until Labor Day, and will feature more than 40 interactive elements that go over eight steps of the filmmaking process – modeling, rigging, surfaces, sets and cameras, animation, simulation, lighting, and rendering. It also allows visitors get get up close with re-creations of some favorite Pixar characters, like Buzz Lightyear, Dory, Mike and Sulley, and Wall-E.

The Science Museum of Minnesota is the fourth museum in the U.S. to get this exhibit, which was created by the Museum of Science Boston and Pixar Animation Studios.

If you want to go

Tickets are $28.95 for adults and $22.95 for kids and seniors, although there are discounts for museum members and people with limited incomes.

They'll go on sale in May, at which point you'll have to pick a specific date and time for your visit. You can join the priority ticket list online here, which will give you the chance to buy tickets before they go on sale to the public.

There's also a 21-plus event to preview the Pixar exhibit. It's part of the museum's Social Science series, and will be held June 8 from 6-10 p.m. More details on that here.
