A song of ice and fire? MN has a red flag and freeze warning coming up

There's a high fire danger for some portions of Minnesota Thursday afternoon because of "critical fire weather conditions."

Basically, that means high winds and low humidity.

A red flag warning will run from 1-7 p.m., for Brown, Watonwan, Blue Earth, Waseca, Martin, Faribault and Freeborn counties, the National Weather Service says.

Northwest winds of 2o-30 mph, with gusts of 35 mph, are expected by that time. In addition, the humidity will fall to about 25 percent. All that, combined with dry fuels, means "any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly," the weather service says.

The Minnesota DNR has a "high" fire danger level for the southwest corner of the state and through some of southern Minnesota (see the photo at right). It's "moderate" in most of the rest of the state, outside of some "low" danger up around the North Shore.

There's also a freeze warning

Following the fire warning, there's actually a freeze warning for some of the most southwestern counties from 3-9 a.m. Friday (around Marshall, Pipestone, Windom and Worthington). The high Thursday is in the mid-60s, but it'll drop down to just below freezing overnight and Friday.

The warning is also in effect for basically the entire northwest portion of the state.

It'll be around 50 degrees as a high Thursday, dropping to the mid-20s at night, with a "widespread hard freeze expected."
