A spoiler-free review of Star Wars Rogue One

It's dark, funny, and very true to the Star Wars universe.

Here's a recap from an early screening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. (Sick seeing movies early brag!)

My spoiler-free thoughts on the upcoming stand-alone Star Wars flick follow Since this is 2016 and nobody likes reading full paragraphs, I'll just share my thoughts on bullet point form, cool? Cool.

  • I loved it. I absolutely loved it. I was a bit skeptical going in because of the much-publicized reshoots this summer. That, and this being the first standalone Star Wars film that isn’t directly connected to the Skywalkers. Would it feel like Star Wars? Or was this just a cash-in from Disney trying to recoup the billions they spent on the franchise rights? It absolutely felt like Star Wars. It gives you all the same feels you’ve come to know and love, despite not having an opening crawl.
  • It’s dark. Very dark. By far the most gritty and violent Star Wars movie. Even darker than the time that guy chopped his son’s arm off with a light saber. Parents might want to see it first before bringing their Rey and Finn-loving sons and daughters to see this one.
  • Darth Vader is just so cool. He has a scene that people will be talking about for a long time. It’s amazing seeing such an iconic character back in his full glory, even if he is evil as all hell.
  • Remember falling in love with Daisy Ridley and her character Rey in last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Get ready to feel the same way with Felicity Jones’ Jyn. Badass Star Wars women for the win!
  • It’s funny. There were some genuine laugh-out-loud moments. The new, smart-ass robot K-2SO is a great addition to the Star Wars universe.
  • It’s also very emotional. There were multiple times I got choked up. Be ready for things to get a little dusty in the movie theater.
  • The movie is over two hours, but never feels long. I didn’t want it to end. That being said, plan your bathroom breaks. You don’t want to leave your seat during the incredible third act. Trust me. I just got chills writing that sentence as I recalled it all in my head. You won’t even want to blink to miss a moment.
  • As we all know, the majority of characters in Rogue One are new to the Star Wars universe. But this wouldn’t be a Star Wars film without a few winks, nods, and familiar faces.
  • Stay tuned through the credits. There is a hilarious Jar Jar Binks music video where he covers big pop songs from 2016.
  • Just kidding about that last one.

There you have it. I don’t want to say much more for fear of giving away too much information.

Enjoy the movie this weekend. It’s the Star Wars stand-alone film you never knew you needed in your life and after you see it you’ll wonder how we ever lived without it. Now the countdown for Episode VIII begins! What a time to be a Star Wars fan. These are the good old days.
