A wild bobcat got into Duluth's convention center Tuesday

A bobcat was chased into the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center on Tuesday.

It's something you just can't make up, Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay posted on Facebook, adding when he heard about a man looking for a bobcat in the downtown skywalks and in the convention center, "I knew it wasn't true."

But then he saw the pictures.

The Duluth Police Department wrote on Facebook a man "experiencing a mental health crisis" had chased the young bobcat into the convention center and cornered it in a hallway, but staff there intervened before the man could be injured by the wild animal.

Apparently he had encountered the bobcat in the Canal Park area and followed it, trying to catch it – eventually the pursuit led to the DECC, Wildwoods, a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation organization, posted on Facebook.

A conservation officer with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was called in to help get the animal into a live trap, police note. But the whole ordeal caused the bobcat to become "very stressed out," so it was taken to Wildwoods to be monitored before being released back into the wild. That'll probably sometime in the spring, Wildwoods notes.

Besides being stressed and a little dehydrated, Wildwoods says she (who they named Bonnie) was "very healthy," but noted the bobcat was young, weighing 9 pounds, and still had its baby teeth. (Full-grown, healthy bobcats weigh about 22-25 pounds, Wildwoods notes.)

It's not uncommon for people in Duluth to encounter wild animals near the city, Wildwoods says, but encounters with bobcats in the wild are quite rare, the DNR's website says. In fact, Wildwoods says it only gets about one bobcat a year.

Bobcats are the most common of the three lynx species that are native to Minnesota, the DNR says, noting about 2,000 of them live in northern Minnesota.
