Accomplice in 'Slenderman' stabbing to be released from mental health facility

The crime shook Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 2014.

One of the perpetrators of the infamous Slenderman stabbing — in which two young Wisconsin girls nearly killed a schoolmate in the name of an internet boogieman — will soon be free.

Anissa Weier, 19, was approved for conditional release in a Waukesha County Court on Friday, officially bringing an end to her stay at Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh.

This comes more than seven years after she and a friend, Morgan Geyser, lured another girl into a wooded area and stabbed her 19 times – all at the bidding of Slenderman, a supernatural monster that originated in a fictional internet "creepypasta" in 2009.

The case gained notoriety across the country, sparking a national conversation about the effects of the internet on young children. A documentary about the crime and its aftermath, titled "Beware the Slenderman," premiered on HBO in 2016.

Both perpetrators, who were 12 at the time of the incident, were charged with attempted homicide and tried as adults. Geyser, the so-called mastermind of the plot, was ultimately sentenced to 40 years of mental health treatment, while Weier was committed to treatment for 25 years.

But in July, a Wisconsin judge approved Weier's petition for conditional release, giving state officials 60 days to "draw up a conditional release plan," NPR reported at the time.

She'll walk free on Monday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Her "community supervision" will last until she's 37 years old, the paper notes.

During the aftermath of the stabbing, it emerged that Geyser had been diagnosed with early-onset schizophrenia, and psychologists later testified the two suspects had a "shared delusional disorder."

Geyser is said to have ultimately committed the stabbing while Weier urged her on.
