The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is arguably the most beautiful location in Minnesota – but could you spend a whole year there?

That's what Ely couple Dave and Amy Freeman plan on doing starting this September, in what will be their latest adventure to raise awareness about the BWCA and what they say is a need for its protection from nearby sulfide-ore copper mining.

The duo the headlines earlier this year when they paddled a canoe 2,000 miles from Ely to Washington D.C., where they met with lawmakers to discuss the future of Minnesota's wilderness area.

And they're going to prove their love for the place by spending a whole 12 months there – enduring a Minnesota winter in the process, according to their Facebook page.

They are bidding to get funding for their expedition by entering their proposal to win $10,000 from Nexen Tire as part of its Canoe & Kayak expedition contest. It'll be decided by an online vote.

"We will travel by canoe during the ice-free season and by dog team when the water is not in its liquid form," Amy said on the contest website. "We will be immersed in the wilderness, documenting the change of the seasons, collecting water quality data from every major lake."

They have said they will be moving around the wilderness throughout the year, camping at 120 different sites and traveling more than 3,000 miles.

"This is not your typical expedition geared toward traveling from point A to point B in X amount of time; rather it is about bearing witness to the very land and water we are fighting to protect," Amy said. "The 365-day adventure begins on the Fall Equinox (September 23) 2015."

The canoe wilderness covers an area of 1.5 million acres and hugs the Minnesotan border with Canada for 150 miles, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

A popular location for adventurers, it contains 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 12 hiking trails and more than 2,000 designated campsites.
