Affidavit: Bachmann aide caught stealing money in police sting

The former senior legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann accused of stealing cash from the congresswoman's office was baited by police, according to court documents.

Javier Sanchez, 37, of Arlington, Va. was arrested last week and charged with one count of misdemeanor theft.

After several thefts were reported this year at the Rayburn House Office Building, U.S. Capitol Police installed a hidden camera in Bachmann's congressional office, according to the court affidavit obtained by the Star Tribune.

Police also left two envelopes containing cash, one with $80 marked "petty cash" and the other with $120 marked "Birthday Money" in staffers' desk drawers.

Surveillance video from June 14 shows a man, later identified by staffers as Sanchez, open one of the drawers where the "petty cash" was stashed and remove the envelope, count the money and take the cash along with the envelope.

Minutes later, the same man was shown sitting at the office scheduler's desk, where the $120 was placed. Both the envelopes and cash were discovered missing on June 25.

The affidavit mentions two previous thefts of money at Bachmann's office in February and March, but only links Sanchez to the most recent incident. Sanchez was hired by Bachmann's office in January after working for North Carolina congresswoman Virginia Foxx.

The former aide was fired last Friday and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Washington Post says Sanchez was released from jail and is scheduled for a status hearing on Aug. 26.
