Icy spots make Friday morning drive difficult – but better than yesterday

After a nightmarish Thursday in which 654 crashes, 429 spinouts or vehicles off the road, and 11 jackknifed semis were reported on Minnesota's roads, everyone's big questions was, "How will Friday morning be?"

Better than yesterday, but still icy, seems to be the verdict.

While snowfall wasn't an issue today, the constant cold weather made for patches of slick road. That's because temps overnight sank from low to lower, dropping to the single digit negatives throughout basically the entire state by this morning. The cold was basically able to quickly freeze any type of condensation that lands on the pavement.

Reports of crashes began to trickle in shortly after 6 a.m. MnDOT tallied more than two dozen accidents by the late morning, most of them in the metro area. Nearly all the state's roads were listed as "normal" or "partially covered" with snow and ice. Only 197 through Bemidji was worse, marked as completely covered.

Here's a map from MnDOT. (Crashes are purple exclamation marks. Green roads are normal, blue are partially covered.)
