After a weekend of warmth, much cooler temperatures return this week

After a weekend of summer-like weather, fall temperatures will return to much of the state.

Temperatures are expected to be 10-15 degrees above average for much of southern Minnesota, where sunny skies and temperatures in the lower 80s are expected for Sunday, the National Weather Service says.

In the northern half of the state, cloud cover is expected to increase, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the day. Temperatures will also be cooler, in the lower 70s, the weather service says.

This could put a damper on anyone trying to view Sunday night's lunar event:

A cold front is expected to push through Minnesota Sunday night. Along with cooler temperatures, there's a chance for showers across southern Minnesota Monday.

Behind the front, more seasonable temperatures are in the forecast for the work week. Highs in the 50s and 60s are expected during the day for much of the week, and overnight temperatures could approach freezing across northern Minnesota by Tuesday morning, the weather service says.

This week's temperatures will be approaching "sweater weather" for many. A Weather Channel survey found "sweater weather" for Minnesotans is 55 degrees. The national average is 60 degrees.

Snow ushers in cooler weekend

A light snow shower should lead us into some cooler temperatures this weekend, though temps shouldn't stray too far from the average. Most forecasters are predicting the metro will see anywhere from a light dusting to an inch of snow.
