A Minneapolis rooftop-dining hotspot has closed its doors after 11 years on Hennepin Avenue. In an email to staff that has been published on Twitter, Solera's owners indicated the Spanish tapas theme was considered too niche in a competitive market.

The Twin Cities saw a record number of restaurants open in 2014.

Star Tribune details the history of Solera, which La Belle Vie owners Tim McKee and Josh Thoma opened near the Orpheum Theatre in 2003.

The Star Tribune calls the restaurant a "major trendsetter." Solera picked up a number of accolades including a four-star review from the Star Tribune, and McKee and Thoma were the Strib's Restaurateurs of the Year.

Solera was sold in 2010 to a subsidiary of the Hennepin Avenue Opportunity Fund, and it was managed by Graves Hospitality Corp.

Longtime chef Jorge Guzman left earlier this year for a new gig at Surly Brewing Co.'s new "destination brewery" in southeast Minneapolis.

Mpls.St.Paul Magazine Food Editor Stephanie March says the space won't stay empty for long. A press release states building owners are looking at other tenants to fill the space with a concept that reaches more guests.

Customers are sad to see Solera go. There's been an outpouring of comments on Twitter:
