A standoff between police and a man who had barricaded himself in his Cottage Grove home ended Wednesday morning after a tense 11-plus hours with police and SWAT officers on the scene.

The incident began around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, on the 8100 block of Harkness Road, police said. The suspect was taken into custody at about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, Cottage Grove Police said.

A man called police and said his 33-year-old step-son had a rifle and threatened him. He and the boy's mother managed to escape the house and phone 911.

Police and SWAT officers were sent to the scene.

According to a department press release issued after the incident, the man acted "hostile and aggressive" toward police, and on multiple occasions was seen pointing a shotgun at officers. He taunted them to come inside and get him, the police department says, and refused to communicate – at one point, he shot the "communication device" police sent in while trying to resolve the incident.

SWAT members used "distraction devices" on multiple occasions, including deploying gas. But the suspect did not cooperate.

After working through the night, officers entered the home after identifying the suspect was laying on a couch. "Less lethal" measures were used, police said, and he was taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, and could face multiple felony charges.

Police also asked nearby residents to stay in their homes during the ordeal, calling it a "safety hazard" if officers' attention is drawn away from the suspect's home. A handful of roads were blocked off, and police asked anyone who needed to leave the area call the Washington County Dispatch Center.
