An Afton resident is offering a $1,000 reward for information about the cutting and killing several trees in the area.
According to the city’s August newsletter, city staff discovered an incident of “tree girdling” in the Perrot Avenue right-of-way between Pennington Avenue and St. Croix Trail, near 32nd and 33rd streets.
Tree girdling involves cutting off the bark around the circumference of a tree, interfering with sap flow and causing the area above the cut to die.
The city estimates the damage caused by the tree girdling totals around $60,000, according to KDWA.
In the newsletter, the city notes that a local resident is offering a reward leading to the arrest of the individual responsible for the girding.
