Aitkin Co. fire consumes thousands of acres; DNR expects containment soon

The combination of fierce winds and dry conditions across the state have taken their toll in east-central Minnesota, where a wildfire is raging across 2,500 acres.

DNR officials believe the fire, which started near Tamarack on Thursday afternoon, was likely ignited by a person as it was apparently sparked near a road, according to KSTP.

It's still unclear where it was started intentionally. Luckily, no structures or people have been threatened by the blaze.

Despite its size, officials expect to have the wildfire contained by this afternoon, WDIO reports.

This comes at a particularly vulnerable time for the state, especially in the northland, where multiple fires prompted Governor Mark Dayton to press the Minnesota National Guard into service.

Two Blackhawk helicopters equipped with 660-gallon water buckets took part in the firefighting effort.

Much of the state is at risk for fires, as a mild winter with little snow fall left most of Minnesota in drought conditions, while other regions described as "abnormally dry."
