It follows allegations of inappropriate conduct from multiple women.

The Essentials

1. Al Franken has announced he will resign as a Minnesota senator following allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct from several women. He confirmed it in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday morning.

2. "Over the last few weeks a number of women have come forward to talk about how they felt my actions had affected them. I was shocked. I was upset. In response to their claims I wanted to be respectful to that broader conversation, because all women deserve to be heard and their experiences taken seriously.

"Some of the allegations against me are simply not true, others I remember very differently. I said at the outset that the ethics committee was the right avenue for these things to be heard.

"I know in my heart that nothing I have done as a senator, nothing, has brought dishonor on this institution. And I am confident the ethics committee would agree. Nevertheless I am announcing that in the coming weeks I will be resigning as a member of the U.S. Senate."

3. Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton will pick someone to fill his position on an interim basis, ahead of a special election in November 2018. He says he'll make a decision in the next few days.
