A Maplewood man was killed in a Halloween-night crash in Cass County.

It happened on Highway 84 and Glenmar Drive in Wabedo Township, which is about 50 miles north of Brainerd.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the GMC Sierra driven by Steven Christopher Shelton, 43, crossed the center line at a curve and sideswiped a Ford F-150 coming the opposite direction.

This caused a chain reaction in which the Sierra left the road, overcorrected, and ended up striking a tree on the opposite side of the highway.

The Patrol says Shelton was not wearing his seatbelt at the time; additionally, they say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The 70-year-old driver of the F-150 was not hurt.

With this accident, and the alcohol-related one that shut down Interstate 35 near North Branch early Friday morning, the number of 2019 Minnesota road deaths is now at least 303, with almost two months left in the year to go.

That's according to the latest crash data from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Last Halloween, there were six road fatalities, a tweet from the State Patrol says:
