A 26-year-old man died Saturday night after his truck went airborne and struck a tree in the Park Rapids area of north-central Minnesota.

The State Patrol says the GMC pickup, driven by Taner Scott Berttunen, had struck a Lexus "at a high rate of speed" before leaving the roadway around 9:30 p.m. near Hidden Drive.

Berttunen, a resident of Menahga, was not wearing a seatbelt; however, the two occupants of the Lexus were, and neither was hurt in the collision.

Responding agencies included the State Patrol, the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office and the Park Rapids Police Department.

The accident brings the number of Minnesota traffic fatalities close to 190 for the year so far.

As of July 31, 186 people had died on Minnesota roads, according to the latest statistics from the state Department of Transportation.

A total of 381 people died in traffic incidents here in 2018.
