Already an Amazon hit, MN man's card game is now in Target stores

A new game has gone on sale at Target – and it was created by a Minnesotan.

Tom Rohlf, 26, is the man behind "The Voting Game," a card game which has already sold thousands of copies on Amazon and hit the shelves at Target stores nationwide this week, Rohlf told BringMeTheNews.

His father, Craig Rohlf, said in a Facebook post his son "wrote the copy, sourced the manufacturing in China and learned how to sell/distribute on Amazon."

Tom Rohlf, who is from Plymouth but has since moved to California, funded the project through a Kickstarter campaign last year.

He managed to raise $28,278 from the fundraising site even though he was just looking to raise $7,500.

To date, Tom Rohlf has sold tens of thousands of copies of the game, which is available in eight countries. There's also an iOS app that people can download for additional expansion packs, he told BringMeTheNews.

How do you play the game?

The game is for adults and is in the vein of "Cards Against Humanity." It is best played with a large group of friends, with one of them starting things off by reading out a question card.

Every player then votes anonymously for the player that is best described by the question, with the results then tallied and revealed to the group.

Each player then guesses who voted for them, and if they guess correctly "the truth is revealed," its Amazon description says.

Here are some examples of the questions:

  • Who would have the hardest time talking their way out of an insane asylum?
  • Who will be the hardest to recognize in 10 years?
  • Who would lose an election because of something they did in high school?

Tom Rohlf says the game was first played at a music festival – he and friends ripped up slips of paper for voting cards and came up with questions on the fly. Over the next few years, he'd play "that voting game" in a similar way with other groups of friends. People seemed to like it, so he decided to turn it into a real game.

And he's come up with another one, which launches on Kickstarter July 19. It's a follow-up adult party game called Hot Seat – you can download a free version online here.

When Tom Rohlf isn't inventing games, he works as a product designer for a technology start-up in San Francisco.
