Amazing video: Lake ice crystals advance on shore

The striking dichotomy was hard to miss this past weekend – long-awaited warm spring weather and sunny skies contrasted with ice still on the lakes.

Check out this odd video posted by Nadalie Thomas to YouTube of the shore at Medicine Lake in the far west metro, where the water appears to be throwing ice crystals up on land (it was the most popular video on Reddit Monday morning):

KARE 11 said Thomas was with her kids at the shoreline when they captured on video the large piles of ice splintering into fine shards similar to glass, and making a loud noise in the process.

KARE 11 on Sunday visited local metro lakes, where people in shorts were looking out at icy waters. A Wayzata Yacht Club boater was out on Lake Minnetonka Sunday deliberately making waves to try to break up ice sheets that can damage boats and docks, KARE reported:

The Duluth News Tribune has more weather-related video – of Northland rivers that have finally broken free of ice and are flowing freely. Waterfalls are putting on a show, the newspaper reports.
