Amazon's newest reason to never leave your house: Free restaurant food delivery

Amazon Prime members in Minneapolis can now get restaurant food delivered – for free.

Minneapolis is the 13th city in the country where Amazon Prime's one-hour restaurant delivery is available.

The restaurants people can order from include: Hell’s Kitchen, Key’s Café and Bakery, The Lowry, Common Roots Café, Gandhi Mahal, Broders’ Pasta Bar, Broders’ Cucina Italiana, Terzo, Manny’s Tortas, French Meadow Bakery and Café and select Leeann Chin locations, Amazon told BringMeTheNews.

Prime members (it's $99 a year for a membership) can order delivery through the Prime Now app or by visiting the Prime Now website. There, you'll be able to look at menus, place your order and track the status of your delivery in real time.

Where is it available?

Restaurant delivery will be available in several Minneapolis neighborhoods, including Calhoun-Isles, Uptown, Linden Hills and Dinkytown, according to Amazon, and Star Tribune says it hopes to expand the service in the coming weeks.

To find out if it's available for you, log in to Prime Now and enter your zip code. If the service is available, you'll see "restaurants" on the home page, according to Amazon.

“As a restaurateur, we’re delighted to partner with the world’s unquestioned delivery experts and excited to send not just our food, but our peanut butter into more homes than ever," Cynthia Gerdes, co-owner of Hell’s Kitchen, said in a news release.

The cost, and other delivery services

The internet giant isn't the first to offer restaurant delivery in the Twin Cities – there's Bite Squad, Postmates, DoorDash, Dining In, and Seamless, to name some. But Amazon is different from the other delivery companies because it's not charging a delivery fee, the Star Tribune says.

Amazon promises that there are no menu markups or hidden service fees when ordering through Amazon Prime Now, and it says it will refund a customer if they find a restaurant item is priced higher than the regularly-priced item on the restaurant's online menu.

This comes as Amazon is expanding its offerings in the Twin Cities. The company launched Amazon Prime Now in the Twin Cities last fall, and last month it started offering alcohol delivery.
