Ambulance tipped after being hit by teen who ran red light

A young mother and her child were in the back of the ambulance.

Five people are injured, including a young child, after an ambulance was hit by a car in the northern Twin Cities Monday evening.

The incident happened at 109th Ave. NE and Hwy. 65 in Blaine just before 9 p.m., when an Allina Ambulance was hit as it went through the intersection southbound on Hwy. 65.

It was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old boy who went through a red light, Blaine police say, and the impact caused the ambulance to tip onto its side.

The ambulance was transporting a 23-year-old woman and her three-year-old son from an unrelated incident. They suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash.

On Facebook, a woman named Alexis Aunalea claims she was the mother involved in the crash, writing: "This was me and my son we almost died just glad we made it to the hospital alive is short never thought it would be us😳 God was with us!!!"

Also injured, but also not seriously, were the two ambulance crew and the teenage driver of the car. They were all taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The teen driver has been charged with a misdemeanor citation.

Alcohol was not a factor, police said.
