Annual report on U.S. roads gives Minnesota low marks

An annual report on the condition of American highways finds Minnesota is not keeping up with other states when it comes to road maintenance.

The report by the Reason Foundation used 11 categories to measure the condition and cost-effectiveness of highways in every state. Minnesota ranked 15th among the states two years ago, but has fallen to 42nd place in the latest report, says KARE-11.

The categories that particularly hurt Minnesota were the congestion of urban interstates and the pavement condition on rural interstates, ranking 49th in those areas. The foundation says among metropolitan areas only Los Angeles has more congested interstate highways than the Twin Cities. Here's the report's page on Minnesota.

The Reason Foundation notes that the report uses data from 2009, which are the most recent available for every state.

Which state has the best roads? The survey says North Dakota, which has been ensconced in the top spot since 2001, Valley News Live reports.
