Another blow for downtown dining as award-winning Mpls restaurant calls it quits

Another big name in Minneapolis' dining scene is closing its doors.

In a press release on Wednesday, as reported by Heavy Table, the owner of Vincent, A Restaurant on Nicollet Mall confirmed he would be shutting on Dec. 31 after 14 years in business.

The highly-respected French (with an American influence) restaurant is a multi-award winner helmed by Vincent Francoual.

Its closure comes just a week after another top city restaurant, La Belle Vie, revealed it plans to close on Oct. 24.

But unlike La Belle Vie, which said it fell victim to "changing consumer tastes and rising costs," the decision to close Vincent is a personal one by owner and executive chef Francoual.

"Running Vincent A Restaurant has been an incredible experience, professionally and personally, full of rewards and challenges," he said, Heavy Table reports. "After 14 years and careful consideration, I have decided it is time for me to move forward into another stage of my life, and close the restaurant."

He provided more context to the Star Tribune, saying: "I've been rethinking my life and, after a lot of reflection, I’ve basically just decided to move on to something new.

"This is more of a life decision than a business decision."

In the press release, he insisted that the decision to close wasn't influence by the ongoing $50 million reconstruction of Nicollet Mall, which has caused plenty of disruption, nor was it linked to the Working Families Agenda being discussed by the City of Minneapolis.

The Star Tribune notes that for all the new eateries entering the Twin Cities market in recent years, there has been a rash of closures for established eateries, including the Blue Point, Modern Cafe, Pracna on Main, and Masa (which also closes on Oct. 24).

CityPages notes that Vincent is best known for its "classy downtown restaurant" version of the Minnesota Juicy Lucy – called "The Vincent Burger."
