Apple Valley police discover largest heroin stash in county history

When police in Apple Valley responded to a domestic disturbance call last Friday, they didn't expect to make county history.

The Pioneer Press reports officers stumbled upon more than $100,000 in heroin--the most Dakota County has ever seized.

“To keep the large quantity of this seizure in perspective, we have never seized more than 500 grams of heroin in an entire year in Dakota County,” Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom tells WCCO. “This seasure alone is over twice that amount.”

Police were called to an apartment complex near Cedar Avenue and 128th Street West around 12:40 a.m. on March 29 for a report of a woman yelling for help and a man yelling at her, according to the criminal complaint.

The first officer to arrive found a man, later identified as 48-year-old Warren Earl Comeaux of Brooklyn Park, in the passenger seat of a parked car and he "appeared to be digging in the vehicle."

When officers approached the car, Comeaux got out, noticed the officers and continued digging. Police thought Comeaux might have been digging for a weapon, so they drew their guns.

As police patted him down, Comeaux tried to run, but didn't get far before police caught up with him.

While searching the car for a weapon, "One officer noted that the vent on the dashboard projected an inch from the dashboard itself. When the officer pulled on the vent, the vent easily slid out and there he viewed an oblong package wrapped in black electrical tape," the complaint states.

The package turned out to be about 2.6 pounds of heroin. The Star Tribune reports the drugs were worth about $140,000.

Comeaux faces two felony controlled substance charges.

His attorney tells the Pioneer Press that Comeaux doesn't own the car and knows nothing about the drugs.

According to the court document, Comeaux spent 180 months in federal prison for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and heroin and use of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

He's out of jail on $60,000 bail.
