A new survey reveals which stores Americans like best, and it includes more than just retailers. Because fast-food restaurants are technically categorized as stores, they are included in the rankings.

The results were culled from data provided by Placed, a consumer habits data service provider that monitors behavior of more than 150,000 American consumers at 150 million locations daily. Business blog 24/7 WallStreet broke the data down.

The survey notes that "most popular" closely correlates to "most." The companies that make the list have the most locations in the country. Walgreens, 7-Eleven and CVS Caremark all had more than 7,000 U.S. locations in 2012, while Subway, McDonald’s and Starbucks each had well over 14,000 U.S. locations in 2012. In addition, the most popular stores with consumers tended to have large advertising budgets, with seven of the 10 most popular stores were among the top-spenders on advertising nationwide in 2011 and 2012.

On a day when Target is in the news because of a shuffle in the Big Boss office, the company may be heartened to hear it landed in the top ten list, but may feel disappointed to note the Minneapolis retailer ranks behind not only arch-rival Walmart, but also drug store behemoth Walgreens. The analysis found that Target tracks well with the young and with more affluent. "Consumers in the 18-to-34 age group were 11% more likely than the average American to visit a Target. Americans earning at least $100,000 annually were even more likely to visit Target than other stores," the story said.

These are America’s most popular stores:
1. Walmart

2. McDonald's

3. Subway

4. Starbucks

5. Walgreens

6. Target

7. CVS Careview

8. Burger King

9. Taco Bell

10. 7-Eleven
