Obama: 46 drug offenders 'deserve their second chance'

As part of an effort to reform some of the U.S. criminal justice system's sentencing laws for non-violent crimes, President Barack Obama on Monday commuted the prison sentences of 46 drug offenders. The move freed over a dozen of the prisoners from life sentences.

U.S. knew of Mexican drug lord's escape plans

Documents uncovered by the Associated Press show the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration was aware of plans to spring infamous cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán from prison in Mexico. However, the documents did not include information on the Saturday prison break that saw Guzmán flee through a nearly mile-long subterranean tunnel.

Iran nuclear deal in peril amid diplomatic back-and-forth

Iran's diplomats are reporting that they won't be able to meet a midnight deadline – the fourth it has been given by international negotiators – to agree to the terms of an international deal on its nuclear energy program. An agreement had seemed imminent, though Washington still has some "sticking points."
