A 19th century painting that had hung in a historic Red Wing hotel for more than 50 years was swiped this week by a thief who just walked out with the artwork, the Red Wing Republican Eagle reported. But the painting was promptly returned, the newspaper reported.

Police got a call about the missing oil-on-canvas work “Portrait of a Young Woman in a White Dress” just after midnight Tuesday, the newspaper reported. Police said a man went into the St. James Hotel, snatched the painting off its hook and strolled out with it.

Lake City police stopped the man hours later and recovered the painting, the Republican Eagle reported.

The artwork was appraised at $3,500 about 10 years ago. St. James General Manager Mike McKay said he planned to have an expert examine a scuff mark on the painting and check it over for other damage.
