As heat wave fades, string of tornado and hail-producing storms will hit the state

As the intense heat starts to move on, the next threat of inclement weather is already on the way.

A warm and moist airmass is fueling the potential for some damaging storms which might include tornados.

The National Weather Service said that there will be two rounds of storms today – the first coming out of south central Minnesota starting mid-morning and the second moving into western Minnesota this afternoon and crossing the state into the evening.

Both rounds of storms will have the chance to produce torrential downpours. The afternoon string of thunderstorms pose a risk for damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes.

The area of enhanced risk for severe weather includes a swath of the state from the Fargo/Moorhead area down through the Twin Cities and Mankato, encompassing most of central and western Minnesota.

The Northland, who just endured mass damage after storms on Wednesday night that left 30,000 without power, is once again bracing for some heavy rainfall.

Even outside of the enhanced risk area, thunderstorms are likely, which prompted the NWS to issue a flash flood watch for the greater Duluth/Superior area.

While the worst of the heat wave is behind us, the heat indicies will once again climb into the 90s and near 100 by this afternoon.

West-central Minnesota is getting hit with this storm Tuesday morning.

Storm system brings rain, wind, hail, tornadoes ... and snow?

The same storm system that brought deadly tornadoes to Oklahoma left Minnesota soggy but uninjured. Spotters reported seeing several funnel clouds in the air and a couple of tornadoes apparently touched down in southern Minnesota. In the northland, the storm will produce overnight snow, with up to six inches possible in some areas.
