At just under 6 feet, Como Zoo's new baby giraffe set to make public debut

The Como Zoo welcomed a new baby giraffe to its herd this week.

And she's no little lady: She came into the world weighing 135 pounds, standing 5-feet, 8-inches tall.

The yet-to-be-named female is expected to make her public debut Thursday – if her mother Clover allows, the zoo says.

The giraffes at the zoo have the option of roaming outside where the public can see them, or staying behind the scenes – a place Clover stays more often than the other giraffes, the zoo notes.

This baby girl is Clover's sixth calf and the 19th giraffe born at the Como Zoo in the past 22 years. The zoo's herd consists of Clover, Daisy, Skye, and the baby's father Skeeter.

The calf's height is expected to double within the first two years of her life, and by the time she's an adult she could be up to 18-feet tall and weigh 3,000 pounds, with a tongue as long as 18 inches.

Reticulated giraffes are native to the dry Savannah and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa and can go weeks without drinking water, according to the Como Zoo.

Like human fingerprints, no two giraffes have the same pattern of spots, the zoo notes.
