At least one person was killed when an SUV careened off I-35 near Cloquet and submerged in the St. Louis River.
The Minnesota State Patrol said the crash was reported just after noon Tuesday near mile market 239 on southbound interstate i-35, just south of Scanlon. A Ford Explorer left the freeway and crashed into the river below, becoming submerged as a result.
Killed in the crash was 78-year-old passenger Barbara Kimber, of Carlton, Minnesota.
Details of the condition of the driver, an 80-year-old Carlton man, have not yet been released by the State Patrol, with more information expected Wednesday evening.
Kimber was wearing a seatbelt, and police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
It's been a very deadly year on Minnesota roads, with 271 fatalities reported so far in 2021, compared to 219 at the same time in 2020, according to the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety.
