Attempted murder charge filed in air-gun shooting of St. Paul cop

A St. Paul man accused of shooting a police officer with an air gun last week now faces charges including attempted murder and assault.

The criminal complaint filed Monday against Robert Scott Wood, 53, says he was attempting "suicide by cop" during Friday's standoff at his home that lasted more than two hours.

According to authorities, Wood yelled threats and taunts at officers throughout the incident – at one point yelling "Just shoot me and get this over with."

The complaint says Wood later told police he was hoping to provoke officers into shooting him.

Police say when officers arrived at the home in the North End neighborhood, Wood pushed his girlfriend out of the house and she told police he was suicidal and was armed with several knives and a BB gun.

The Pioneer Press says investigators identified the gun as a .25 caliber Benjamin Trail XL air rifle.

Officer Michael Talley (right), an 18-year veteran of the police force, was struck in the right cheek by a metal bullet. Talley was released from a hospital over the weekend and Police Chief Thomas Smith says he's expected to make a full recovery, the Star Tribune reports.

FOX 9 says Smith noted that if the shot had struck Talley slightly differently the results could have been tragic.

The Pioneer Press reports Wood sought a restraining order last March against a man he said was harassing him and in the document Wood referred to himself as a vulnerable adult because of mental illness, mentioning that he is bipolar with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Police say it was Wood's psychiatrist who first called to alert them that Wood may be attempting "suicide by cop."

The charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault could bring Wood up to 40 years in prison and a $30,000 fine, WCCO reports. A judge set bail at $250,000, the station says.
