An ATV driver was seriously injured Tuesday when he crashed and was run over by a field roller being towed by a pickup.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened around 12:40 p.m. on County Road 17 near County Road 170 in Melrose Township.

A 67-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, both of Melrose, were in the side-by-side ATV going north on County Road 17 when they were passed on the left by a Ford pickup pulling a field roller.

The ATV driver tried to make a left turn into a field approach when he struck the field roller. The contact made the 67-year-old driver fall out of the ATV and get run over by the field roller.

He suffered what the sheriff's office describes as "severe injuries" and was transported to Melrose Hospital by ambulance. A North Air helicopter was called to the crash site but couldn't make it due to poor weather conditions.

The 24-year-old passenger in the ATV was not injured, nor was the 69-year-old Melrose man driving the pickup.

The crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol.
