Authorities call off search for Minnesota hikers missing in Colorado

More than a week after a Minnesota father and son headed out for a spring break hike in Colorado's Rocky Mountains authorities have suspended the search for the pair.

CBS 4 in Denver reports searchers have double checked all of the trails in the Echo Lake area without finding any signs of Damian McManus and his 18-year-old son Evan of St. Louis Park.

MPR News reports the search effort may resume after some of the mountain snow melts. A spokesman for the Alpine Rescue Team tells MPR 100 people have taken part in the search amid 3 to 5 feet of snow.

Storms dumped fresh snow on the mountains west of Denver after the McManuses went on their hike. Earlier this week crews were hopeful that a break in the stormy weather would help the search. But another Rescue Team spokesman tells CBS 4 that even after the sun came out high winds and blowing snow hampered the search Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rescuers narrowed the search area based on signals that came from the McManus' cell phones on the day they were last seen. But searchers do not know what direction they were headed.

On Sunday their car was discovered in the parking lot of the Echo Lake Campground, which is in the Arapaho National Forest. The Forest Service says the campground is home to several trail heads.

The ABC affiliate in Denver says there are 5 miles of trails within the campground and many hikers go exploring off the trails.

Damian McManus' wife, Katherine, and Evan's twin sister returned to Minnesota from their mother-daughter Mexican vacation on Sunday and reported the men missing then.

They established a Facebook page to spread the word about the search.

On Wednesday evening Andrea Bouzrara wrote in a post on that page:

The McManus family wants to express their deep gratitude for all of those who were involved in the search for their loved ones. They have also been encouraged and held up by all of the love and prayers from all over the world.
