Authorities find 2 people dead after house fire near McGregor

The sheriff's office and State Fire Marshal are investigating.

An 80-year-old and a 69-year-old woman were found dead after a house fire in central Minnesota.

The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office says deputies and the McGregor Fire Department were called to a home in Shamrock Township just after 11 p.m. Sunday.

Once they arrived, they found the man and woman deceased. Authorities have not identified them yet, as they are working to notify family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, with the State Fire Marshal involved in the probe.

In 2018, 36 people died in fires in Minnesota, the lowest figure in a decade, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said. But in 2017, the state recorded 68 fire deaths – its highest mark since 1995.
