Authorities have identified the man killed at a Minneapolis apartment on Saturday morning, when police arrived to find a "chaotic scene."

Joseph "Moochie" McRunnel, 39, died at Hennepin County Medical Center around 7:20 a.m., just over an hour after an incident in an apartment at 990 15th Ave. SE.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner listed his cause of death as a stab wound to the chest, with the manner of death ruled a homicide.

McRunnel's girlfriend, a 35-year-old woman, was initially taken to detox and was then placed under arrest on suspicion of murder.

Minneapolis police said there were several people at the apartment when they arrived, with neighbors having reported hearing an argument in the early hours of the morning.

A fundraiser started on Facebook by McRunnel's father, Yogi Bellcourt, describes him as "great and giving" particularly to those who found themselves on the street.

"He was a dedicated bum if you will, if there were a Masters Degree in survival in the streets he would have been a Professor," the fundraiser says.

"He spent years teaching others who were finding themselves in the streets how to make it through the winter, which is not an easy thing to do without a roof over your head."

"He was loved by many, he also spent the last few years helping those in the Dinky Town area, how to do this, what to look for, where to look, how to take this and make that out of it so you stay warm or covered," the post adds.

The fundraiser has so far received $510 in donations.
