Authorities have identified the man shot dead by police in Lakeville on Friday.

Kent Kruger, 36, was pronounced dead after a shootout involving Dakota County deputies and Lakeville police in the 20000 block of Italy Avenue in Lakeville just after noon.

The sheriff's office said Kruger had an active warrant out for 4th-degree assault on a peace officer, and he had previously had contact with Lakeville police.

The warrant included an order to vacate the residence on Italy Avenue, but when police arrived and entered the property, he allegedly opened fire on deputies and officers.

Police returned fire, striking him several times. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

"Law enforcement officers place their lives in danger every day to protect the public and enforce the law," a press release from the Dakota County Sheriff's Office said.

"In this situation the subject could have taken the lives of deputies, officers or the public with his decision to open fire. Absent the actions of the deputy, others could have been injured or killed."
