Bachmann: Media misunderstood comments on 2016 presidential run

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann says her comments about running for president in 2016 were wrongly interpreted.

Bachmann, who represents Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District as a Republican, was quoted by RealClearPolitics Tuesday seemingly expressing interest in running for president again after she leaves Congress in a few months. (She is not running for re-election this fall.)

But on Wednesday, Bachmann said on the Team Bachmann Facebook page her comments were misunderstood.

Bachmann said on Facebook she was challenging the reporter's story, which Bachmann claimed was suggesting "no woman would run for president on the Republican ticket in 2016." And that in turn would hurt the party.

Bachmann says the "media has failed to consider there are a number of ... Republican women who could be in the mix for 2016."

Bachmann ran for president in 2012, but ended her campaign after finishing sixth in the Iowa caucus.

MPR News notes that Bachmann leaves the door open for a comeback, when she wrote the following on Facebook:

I asked why the media assumes no Republican woman would run for President in 2016, including potentially someone like me? At this time I have indicated no intention to once again run for the top spot in 2016. Right now my focus remains on serving out the remainder of my term representing Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District.
