A Wisconsin motorist hit the back of an Amish buggy Friday night in Trempealeau County and severely injured a couple and seven children, according to the Trempealeau County Sheriff's Department.

The accident, in western Wisconsin near Winona, happened after 10 p.m., according to the Winona Daily News, when Bradey A. Engen, 19, of Strum, Wis., was northbound on U.S. Hwy. 53 and struck the rear end of a buggy after failing to yield to the slow-moving vehicle.

David and Lydia Wengerd, of Osseo, Wis., along with seven children all suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and were transported to local hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic branch in Osseo, Wis. The sheriff's department said that several of the passengers were thrown from the buggy.

The paper reports that Engen was not injured in the crash, according to the department, which also noted inattentive driving as a cause. The case is under investigation.

"The incident is far from the first in in southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin," the paper reports, citing a growing Amish population in the region and a litany of car-buggy crashes over the last few years.
