Barnes & Noble on Nicollet Mall to close for good this weekend

Coincidentally, it's closing on national Independent Bookstore Day.

Barnes & Noble's downtown Minneapolis store will close its doors for the last time on Saturday, which is also national Independent Bookstore Day.

It was announced in January that the store on Nicollet Mall would be closing in spring, and it's been confirmed that the shop will shutter at 8 p.m. this Saturday.

If you've been in the store in recent weeks you might be forgiven for not thinking its closure was imminent. The Star Tribune reports the bookseller hasn't gone on an all-out price-slashing spree as most of the store's books will be packed and sent to its other stores.

There are discounts on some seasonal books and remaindered items, as well as non-book items like greeting cards, toys and games, the newspaper notes.

This is a far cry from the everything-must-go sale that Macy's, across the intersection from Barnes & Noble, held before closing last year.

Focus now turns to the future of the Nicollet Mall unit, with the Business Journal reporting that the most likely scenario will see one business take ground-level space with two different tenants splitting the second floor.

The website notes that a "few high-end restaurants have expressed interest in the ground floor," which will be a hotspot once the revamp of Nicollet Mall itself is completed later this year.

Independent Bookstore Day

The closure of store belonging to America's most prominent bookselling chain comes coincidentally as the rest of the country marks Independent Bookstore Day.

The "one-day national party" held at indie booksellers across the country is always held on the last Saturday in April, with stores expected to have various special events and activities for visitors.

In the Twin Cities, the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association has teamed up with 18 indie bookstores in the metro area to offer a Twin Cities Independent Bookstore Passport for the day.

Getting the passport stamped at a participating store will activate that store's coupon, which you can bring back at a later date to redeem. Visiting five stores wins you a bookstore day map, 10 stores gives you the chance to win one of 20 literary packs worth $450, and visiting all 18 gives you the chance to win a literary pack worth $850.

Among those taking part is children's bookstore Wild Rumpus in southwest Minneapolis, which was recently named bookstore of the year by Publishers Weekly and will be holding in-store egg hunts throughout the day.
