Injured suspect in custody after 6-hour standoff at Fridley apartment building

A criminal suspect who barricaded himself in a Fridley apartment building Tuesday was taken into custody after a standoff with law enforcement that lasted six hours.

SWAT teams were at the apartment building where residents were evacuated and a road closed while the incident unfolded.

FOX 9 reports the injured suspect was eventually carried from the building on a stretcher.

The Pioneer Press reports authorities identified the fugitive as Eugene Ryan Boos, 42, who had served 19 years in prison for murder but was wanted for violating the terms of his probation.

In the early afternoon, law enforcement surrounded the building where Boos was holed up with a woman. A second woman and several children were evacuated in the early stages of the incident, the Pioneer Press says.

During the afternoon, KSTP described the woman as a hostage.

But FOX 9 says the woman called their newsroom and said she was not being held against her will. The station described the woman as desperate and agitated and says she handed the phone to the suspect, who stayed on the phone with FOX for more than an hour.

Near the end of the phone call – a little after 2 p.m., FOX says – gunshots could be heard and the suspect told the station he'd been shot in the hand by police. FOX says the call ended when a Hennepin County deputy got on the line and the suspect hung up.

WCCO reports Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said Boos told officers he was armed and would not go peacefully.

FOX reports Boos was arrested by Brooklyn Center police in 2012 for violating his parole by possessing drugs and a gun. According to the station, his mother said Boos had been on the run since Dec. 10, when police raided the Minneapolis home where he'd been staying, finding more drugs and another gun.

Streets alongside the Fridley apartment building were closed all afternoon. The Star Tribune reports the evacuated residents were offered shelter in a heated Metro Transit bus, though some chose to wait in a nearby elementary school or in their own cars.
