The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is launching a new effort to identify about 100 sets of human remains found in the state from the 1970s to the 1990s, according to the Associated Press.

The first-ever project supported by a Federal Bureau of Investigations grant will use DNA analysis that wasn't available in past decades to help solve dozens of unsolved missing person cases, WCCO reports.

"We have the technology now to go back to those individuals and use the advancements we have been able to come up with over the past few years and serve these unidentified individuals and give them back their names," Cathy Knutson, the BCA's lab director, told the television station.

The agency is asking for DNA samples from relatives of missing persons to compare with DNA extracted from a bone.

For more information on program or providing a sample, see the full news release.
