Residents in Maple Grove have been notified of what appears to be a young bear wandering around the north side of of the city.
Kristy Barnett, a city councilor, messaged her followers on social media Sunday saying the bear was seen near the Elm Creek Park Reserve, with multiple reports of it being in the area of 107th Ave. and Zachary Ln.
"We have been in touch with Three Rivers Park District PD as well as the MN DNR. This bear appears to be a juvenile bear that was most likely just separated from its mother," Barnett said.
"Please take down bird feeders and put them away for the time being and put garbage cans in a secure area. If we can remove any possible sources of food for this young bear then it will hopefully start to travel north and get out of the area."
There are no reports of the bear doing any damage. Barnett said people who live east of County Road 81, north of Hwy. 610 and west of Hwy. 169 should take the aforementioned steps to encourage the bear to leave the area.
According to the DNR, bear sightings in the north metro aren't all that uncommon, though it is just south of where they are typically seen. Anyone who sees a bear can report it to the DNR through this link.
