Beargrease sled dog race postponed until March

Organizers of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon on Monday night postponed the annual race until March 10 due to a lack of good snow, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

The race was to have begun Jan. 27.

"It was tough, but the trail is terrible. The rain sealed the deal," race coordinator Pat Olson told the newspaper Tuesday. Organizers said a rough trail made the race unsafe for dogs and mushers.

The annual race has been run since 1980, although it was canceled in 2007 and last year because of poor conditions.

The 400-mile race runs from Duluth along the North Shore of Lake Superior, up the Gunflint Trail and returns to Duluth.

The race is named for the man, who along with his brothers, delivered mail between Two Harbors and Grand Marais between 1879 and 1899, using canoes, horses and boats – and most famously, dog sled.

John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon organizers to meet Sunday

The lack of snow along the North Shore is still threatening this year's race. Organizers of the event plan to decide Sunday afternoon whether it can go on as scheduled or if it needs to be postponed or canceled. MPR reports another ten inches of snow would be ideal. Sixty mushers are currently signed-up for the January 29 sled dog race.
