A Bemidji man died in an accidental shooting in the opening hours of the deer hunting season Saturday, Northlands News Center reported.

Beltrami County Sheriff's officials said the hunter was shot by another hunter about nine miles northeast of Bemidji. They said the hunters were acquaintances, but not hunting together.

The other hunter, a male, was identified and released.

An estimated 500,000 hunters are expected to head into the woods in Minnesota during this deer hunting season.

Saturday also marked the opening of Minnesota's two-part wolf hunting season.
