The city of Bemidji has taken another major step on a massive $100 million downtown development project.

It will one one of the largest development projects in the history of thenorthern Minnesota city and will basically create a whole new neighborhood on the south side of Bemidji's downtown.

According to Valley News Live, "The Rail Corridor" development will include some parks, commercial and living space. It will sit on 26-acres of under developed land on either side of an abandoned railroad line.

Here is the Valley News Live report on the development.

The project has been under discussion and planning for years. An extensive plan was developed by the design firm RDG in 2009. Even before then the site was considered for a regional events center, but the Sanford Center was eventually built on the city's south shore instead.

The development project is one of several the city has been working on. The Bemidji Pioneer reports the city council approved the sale of two lots for further development on the city's south shore.

Mayor Rita Albrecht said officials are striving to make Bemidji the place to work and play in north-central Minnesota.
