Best Buy fighting to save 200 'Express' mall and airport vending machines

Best Buy is fighting to save vending machines that sells its goods in more than 200 malls and major airports around the country, after the company that runs them filed for bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy & Debt News reports the Richfield-based retailer is trying to avoid having its vending machines shut down during the holiday shopping and travel season.

It comes after San Francisco-based ZoomSystems, which operates the machines, filed for bankruptcy in September and was considering ending its contract with Best Buy as part of its turnaround strategy.

According to the Wall Street Journal, bankruptcy law allows companies to end contracts that are losing money.

But Best Buy has told BringMeTheNews it is "working with Zoom through their bankruptcy" and added that it is "continuing to operate our Best Buy Express business as usual."

The Business Journal reports notes Best Buy has had a partnership with ZoomSystems since 2008 to run the kiosks, which sell gadgets to travelers passing through airports and in malls where there's no full Best Buy store.

Best Buy's "Express" vending machines sell no-contract mobile phones, chargers, MP3 players, headphones, tablets and digital cameras.
