It comes days after the company slapped a $100 surcharge on the $999 phones.

Best Buy has stopped selling iPhone Xs not linked to a cellphone service provider, days after charging customers an extra $100 to buy one.

Unactivated iPhone Xs – where you pay for the device alone and don't sign up to a cellphone plan – are no longer listed on the Best Buy website.

And the company confirmed to GoMN via Twitter that it's not selling iPhone Xs "without activation."

It means you can only buy iPhone Xs from BestBuy.com that are "activated," where you buy via a cellphone service provider like Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.

It comes after the Minneapolis retailer got some negative press on iPhone X launch day this past Friday, when customers found it was charging an extra $100 for unactivated devices.

Extreme Tech reports that the phone, which on Apple.com costs $999 for an unactivated base model and $1,149 for the 256GB version, were listed at $1,099 and $1,249 respectively on Best Buy.

Those who bought an iPhone X on monthly installment plans through Verizon, AT&T and Sprint paid no extra surcharge, the website notes.

It's not clear whether the decision to scrap unactivated iPhone X sales is the result of the reaction to the surcharge. GoMN has contacted Best Buy to clarify.

On Friday, Best Buy told Bloomberg that the $100 surcharge reflected "the fact that no matter a customer’s desired plan or carrier, or whether a customer is on a business or personal plan, they are able to get a phone the way they want at Best Buy."

“Our customers have told us they want this flexibility and sometimes that has a cost," it added.

Extreme Tech notes that demand for the phone is so high ahead of its general release in stores on Friday, you can already expect a 5-6 week wait if you pre-order your device now.

Best Buy launches free shipping

Best Buy announced on Monday that this holiday season, it will be offering free shipping on ALL orders, temporarily removing the $35 minimum purchase previously required.

You can get free shipping on orders from today, which will last until Christmas Day.

It brings it in line with similar holiday offers from companies like Target and Walmart.
