In a surprising departure, Best Buy's president of digital, global marketing and strategy Stephen Gillett has left the company after just nine months for Symantec Corp., the company said in a statement.

It's the latest in a string of high-level departures at the struggling Minnesota-based electronics retailer, MPR notes.

The Star Tribune wrote about Gillett's rising star (and some confusion over his job title) in May, just a few months into his brief tenure.

Just a few weeks ago, The Street's Rocco Pendola had suggested Best Buy should make Gillett its next CEO: "Trust me. People across spaces, particularly in tech and retail with a pulse respect this guy. It's time for Best Buy's Board to wake up and do likewise. If its doesn't, he'll simply move on to a company where he actually has a real chance to incite change."

Gillett has also been chief information officer for Seattle-based Starbucks Corp., and he was named Information Week's "Chief of the Year" in 2011.

Gillett tweeted a farewell:
